Make sure you visit the fascinating Occupation Museum of Latvia to get an insight of life in Latvia under Soviet rule (which ended in 1991).
The Old Town itself is very impressive, so wander around and enjoy the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture and great buildings, such as the House of Blackheads, Riga Cathedral and also the Freedom Monument. Head for St Peter's Church including its observation gallery for great city views. The redbrick 14th-century Powder Tower contains the Latvian War Museum with displays on the various wars that have ravaged the country.
To experience a bit of local lifestyle, wander around the parks, or head to the busy central market (next to the train station). Food, drink and entertainment is cheap and plentiful here (Latvian beers are superb) and Riga is definitely an enjoyable place to visit for a few days.
Also, if you’re visiting in summertime you could travel to nearby Jurmala (Seahore) - the largest beach resort in the Baltics, a half hour journey away.
